Parker's 3 TDs carry Steelers to big win (AP)

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson (80) hauls in a first quarter pass from quarterback Matt Schuab in front of Pittsburgh Steelers' James Farrior during an NFL football game in Pittsburgh, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. The Steelers won 38-17.

Gary Kubiak did what football fans always beg coaches to do: He went for it in a key short-yardage situation. The problem was the Houston Texans didn't get it -- and, just like that, their chances of beating the Pittsburgh Steelers all but evaporated. The Texans lost a gamble, a challenge and, likely, their opener in the first five minutes of the season.

Pats' Brady injures knee in win over KC (AP)

F-15 fighter jets fly over Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 prior to the New England Patriots football game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tom Brady screamed. The fans went quiet. The seemingly indestructible star of the New England Patriots lay on the ground, clutching his left knee. The NFL's reigning MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion was done for the day -- at least. "He was in a lot of pain. When you hear a scream, you know that," Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard said after hitting Brady on the left leg midway through the...

Favre wins in Jets debut, beats Dolphins (AP)

Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington wipes his face during the final seconds of the NFL football game against the New York Jets on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The Jets defeated the Dolphins 20-14.

Brett Favre sank to one knee on the sideline, helplessly watching the Miami Dolphins try to upstage his comeback with one of their own. Six months after Favre began a brief retirement, he made a stirring debut Sunday as Broadway Brett. But in the final minute the Dolphins marched down the field while Favre's New York Jets clung to six-point lead.

Delhomme TD on last play edges Chargers (AP)

Carolina Panthers tight end Dante Rosario, left, makes a 14-yard touchdown catch in front of the coverage of San Diego Chargers' Eric Weddle, right, as time runs out in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in San Diego. The touchdown gave the Panthers a 26-24 win.

Jake Delhomme came back with a jolt that the San Diego Chargers won't soon forget. Delhomme threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dante Rosario as time expired to lift the Carolina Panthers to a shocking 26-24 win over the Chargers on Sunday. It was a heart-stopping capper to a game that swung wildly with a big defensive play by each team in the second half.

Romo, Barber lead Cowboys past Browns (AP)

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo fires a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Terrell Owens in the second quarter of an NFL football game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Cleveland.

T.O. and his talented teammates were way too much for the Browns. Terrell Owens caught a 35-yard touchdown pass, Tony Romo effortlessly picked apart Cleveland's secondary, Marion Barber scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and the Dallas Cowboys opened a season they expect to end with a Super Bowl title by overwhelming the Browns 28-10 on Sunday.

Ryan, Turner shine in Falcons debuts (AP)

Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, left, and receivers coach Shawn Jefferson argue during the first half of an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 in Atlanta. The Falcons won 34-21.

Matt Ryan hopped down the field to celebrate after his first NFL pass, knocking down teammate Todd McClure along the way. That was about the only stumble as the Atlanta Falcons started a new era. The new quarterback did just fine. The new running back looked like an All-Pro. The new coach was beaming. Ryan became the first quarterback in eight years to throw for a touchdown with his first pass,...

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb (5) scrambles for yardage against the St. Louis Rams during the third quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Philadelphia. The Eagles won 38-3.

Just like a preseason game, Donovan McNabb finished this one early. By the time he went to the sideline, though, he'd turned in a vintage performance. McNabb threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, rookie DeSean Jackson had an impressive debut and the Philadelphia Eagles routed the St. Louis Rams 38-3 on Sunday.

Giants' Kiwanuka angry at Samuels (AP)
New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said on Friday that Washington Redskins tackle Chris Samuels made a dirty play when he fell on the back of his ankle after being beaten on a pass rush on the final play of the NFL season opener. Kiwanuka hurt his left ankle on the play. X-rays were negative, but the ankle was still sore on Friday, and so was Kiwanuka.

Jaguars WR Porter ruled out of opener (AP)
Jaguars receiver Jerry Porter was ruled out of Sunday's season opener at Tennessee because of a hamstring injury. He missed all of camp and the preseason, but returned to practice Monday and had hoped to be back for the opener.

Cowboys CB Newman questionable (AP)
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman is listed as questionable for the season opener at Cleveland. Newman's uncertain status on Friday's injury report was another sign that Adam Jones may make his Dallas debut as a starter on Sunday. It will be Jones' first NFL game since the 2006 season. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said this week that Jones would start if Newman wasn't in the lineup.

Injured LB Hawk back at Packers practice (AP)
Perhaps there's something about recent linebacker play in Green Bay that only makes fans notice how good they are when they're missing. That certainly was the case two seasons ago, when middle linebacker Nick Barnett's value to the Packers became obvious when he sat out a game at Seattle with a broken hand and the defense suffered in his absence.

Giants beat 'Skins to open title defense (AP)

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is sacked by Washington Redskins defensive end Chris Wilson, right, with help from linebacker Jason Taylor, left, during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game Thursday night, Sept. 4, 2008, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Giants beat the Redskins 16-7.

The New York Giants won the Super Bowl with defense and they kicked off defense of that title with more of the same. Playing without Pro Bowl linemen Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, New York limited the new-look Washington Redskins to 11 first downs and 209 total yards and gave indications that these Giants are back for another run in a 16-7 victory that ushered in the NFL season Thursday...

Injury could make 'Pacman' starter (AP)
Call him Adam Jones or Pacman. Maybe even call him a starter. Because the Dallas Cowboys are wary of cornerback Terence Newman's groin injury, there's a chance Jones will make his Dallas debut as part of the starting lineup Sunday in Cleveland. "Yeah, if we didn't start Newman, Adam Jones would start," coach Wade Phillips said Thursday.
