Microtel Inns & Suites and Hawthorn Suites Leadership Team Announced
Wyndham Hotel Group has announced the leadership team for its recently acquired Microtel Inns & Suites and Hawthorn Suites brands. Roy Flora was appointed president of the brands. He previously served their parent company, U.S. Franchise Systems, as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Based in Atlanta, he reports to Tony Berger, Wyndham Hotel Group chief operating officer.

Harrah's Entertainment Reports 2008 Second-Quarter Global Results
The company's second-quarter income from operations was $323.1 million, compared with $477.9 million in the 2007 second quarter. The net loss for the 2008 second quarter was $97.6 million, compared with net income of $237.5 million in the year-ago quarter. First-half revenues declined 2.9 percent to $5.2 billion from $5.4 billion in the first six months of 2007. Income from operations totaled $724.1 million in the 2008 first half, compared with $929.1 million in the prior-year period. The net loss for the first six months of 2008 was $285.4 million, compared with net income of $422.8 million in the first half of 2007.

Q: What percentage of your clientele is American, and has that decreased as the dollar has fallen against the euro? A: Between 15% and 50% are American, depending on the season. The weak dollar/strong euro have influenced traveling habits.

Travelodge to build 55 new seaside hotels | timesonline.co.uk
Travelodge is to recruit a quarter of a new batch of employees from the long term unemployed. The budget hotel chain is spending £150 million building 55 new seaside hotels creating about 1,000 jobs. A quarter of those jobs will be open to local long-term unemployed people through the Government's Local Employer Partnership (LEP) programme. The partnership programme works with Jobcentre Plus to give the long-term jobless special training so that they learn basic skills relevant to an industry. Jobcentre Plus branches then pre-interview potential candidates for would-be employers. The advantage to employers is that local candidates are found without recruitment costs.

Summertime in Las Vegas might be more scorching this year than usual due to the heat from a growing number of condo hotel lawsuits. A group of 40 investors who bought condo-hotel units ” privately owned homes inside hotels that revert to hotel rooms when the owners are away ” are suing the developers of Signature, a hotel and condominium complex developed by a partnership of MGM Mirage and Aventura, Fla.-based Turnberry Associates. The owners claim their units aren't generating the revenue promised by salesmen.

It's got to be depressing for anyone having to go to work these days what with all of the bad news out there - - soaring fuel costs causing airlines to cut domestic capacity up to 14 percent, higher fares, crowded flights, a 5 percent hike in food cost, the price of gas at the pumps, bank failures, home foreclosures, high unemployment and more corporate layoffs. Showing up for work is one thing. Bringing a positive attitude with you and maintaining that attitude is something else. With some jobs I guess you can fake enthusiasm and a positive attitude, but selling hotel rooms is not one of them.

Omni Hotels Goes Phone Book Free | Brand-Wide Program to Preserve More Than 1800 Trees and Other Valuable Resources Each Year
Omni Hotels is hanging up on phone books for good. The luxury hotel brand announced today that it will immediately recycle its current stock of approximately 30,000 phone books and eliminate future use of phone books at all of its properties. "Saying goodbye to phone books means Omni Hotels will preserve approximately 217,200 pounds of paper each year," said Richard Maxfield, senior vice president of operations for Omni Hotels. "Our goal is to preserve more than 18,000 trees over the next decade. We feel good about the impact this initiative will have on the environment."
