Croatia's Mario Ancic withdrew from the U.S. Open on Tuesday with a recurrence of mononucleosis, the second straight year the 25th-ranked player was forced to miss the tournament. Tamira Paszek of Austria beat 14th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (1), 1-6, 6-1 Monday night in a match interrupted four times by rain at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament. The match was tied 1-1 in the third set when the fourth and longest delay halted play for 90 minutes. When they resumed, the 17-year-old Paszek quickly put away a match that lasted nearly seven hours.

Twelfth-seeded Tommy Robredo, a winner two weeks ago on clay, picked up his hard-court game on Monday and beat nemesis Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-2 in the opening match of the Cincinnati Masters. Robredo is 3-3 against Fish, including a loss in their previous meeting at the Australian Open in January. "He destroyed me in three sets," Robredo said.

Injured Venus pulls out of Rogers Cup (AP)
Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has withdrawn from next week's Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament with a knee injury. Williams did not want to risk aggravating the tendinitis in her knee ahead of the Beijing Olympics, tournament director Eugene Lapierre said Friday. She was the lone late withdrawal from the tier-1 event before the draw on Friday.
