Tennis applauds baseball's use of replay (AP)
Jim Courier can find only one possible flaw with instant replay in baseball, and it's purely personal. "I'm going to miss seeing Lou Piniella throw his cap," the former tennis star said this week at the U.S. Open. "I used to love when Sweet Lou would toss those bases." A huge Cincinnati Reds fan, Courier won four Grand Slam championships.

Mirza pulls out of US Open due to wrist (AP)
Sania Mirza of India pulled out of the U.S. Open on Thursday because of a right wrist injury that flared at the Olympic Games. Mirza, who had surgery on her wrist in April, retired from her first-round singles match in Beijing. A statement released Thursday said she had tests and was advised to rest for three weeks.

Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco beat Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Pilot Pen tournament Monday night. Verdasco, ranked No. 13 in the world, had a bye into the second round. He also reached the quarterfinals of this tournament in 2005 and 2007. Seventh-seeded Alize Cornet eliminated Nicole Vaidisova 6-3, 7-6 (8) in a first-round match.

Dlouhy, Bovina win titles in the Bronx (AP)
The Czech Republic's Lukas Dlouhy won the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic on Sunday, beating Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-0, 6-1. In the women's final, Russia's Elena Bovina of Russia defeated Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 7-5. Bovina overcame a 5-3 deficit in the final set. In doubles, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears beat Angela Haynes and Ahsha Rolle 6-0, 6-1 in an all-American final.

Williams sisters win gold in doubles (AP)
Venus and Serena Williams teamed up to win the Olympic doubles final, beating Spanish duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-2, 6-0 on Sunday. The American sisters, seeded second, shrieked when Ruano Pascual sent the championship point long. Then they jumped for joy and hugged each other.

Djokovic beats Blake for bronze medal (AP)
Novak Djokovic has claimed the bronze medal in singles tennis for Serbia by defeating James Blake of the United States 6-3, 7-6 (4) Saturday. When he closed out the tiebreaker, a jubilant Djokovic ripped off his shirt and threw it to the cheering crowd, along with two rackets, and he started to throw his bag before stopping.

Bryan brothers win bronze in doubles (AP)
Mike and Bob Bryan of the United States have won a bronze medal in Olympic doubles. The brothers rallied to defeat Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday. The Olympic medal is the first for the Bryans, who have won all four Grand Slam championships and 48 tournament titles.

Rafael Nadal has clinched at least a silver medal by beating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the Olympic semifinals. Roger Federer kept alive his bid for an Olympic gold medal Friday night, joining Swiss teammate Stanislas Wawrinka to upset top-ranked American twins Bob and Mike Bryan and win a spot in the final.
