Penn St. suspends 3 players for Saturday (AP)
A Penn State football player has been kicked off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules, and three others will miss this weekend's game against Oregon State because of a separate, off-field issue coach Joe Paterno said Thursday. Reserve defensive back Willie Harriott is off the squad, Paterno said Thursday night on his weekly radio show.

WVU-E. Carolina still on for Saturday (AP)
East Carolina's game with West Virginia still is set for Saturday, but athletic director Terry Holland is asking some fans to change the way they park outside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Holland said Thursday that all parking lots will open at 1:30 p.m. -- three hours before the scheduled kickoff time -- to allow drainage in case Tropical Storm Hanna causes localized flooding.

Officials have set a 6 p.m. start time for Saturday's Charleston Southern-Wofford football game. The contest was originally set for Charleston Southern's campus but was moved to Wofford as Tropical Storm Hanna approached the South Carolina coast. On Wednesday, athletic officials at Coastal Carolina moved its football game against Colgate to 1 p.m.

UConn-Tennessee rivalry goes to football (AP)
Connecticut and Tennessee's rivalry is moving from the basketball court to the football field. Connecticut announced Thursday that Tennessee will visit Rentschler Field in East Hartford in 2015, and the Huskies will travel to Neyland Stadium in Knoxville the following year. The two women's basketball powers had met annually, until Tennessee canceled the series a year ago.

Ponder to start at QB for Florida State (AP)
Christian Ponder will start at quarterback for Florida State in its season opener against Western Carolina. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher selected Ponder over senior Drew Weatherford, who has started 33 games for the Seminoles, and sophomore D'Vontrey Richardson. Ponder, a sophomore, has thrown only 18 passes in college.

South Carolina seeks revenge vs. Vandy (AP)
Vanderbilt has had fewer victories as sweet as last year's win at South Carolina. The Gamecocks were ranked No. 6 at the time and the Commodores hadn't beaten a team ranked so highly in more than 70 years. Maryland quarterback Jordan Steffy has ligament damage in his right thumb, an injury that will sideline him for at least three weeks and return Chris Turner to the starting role. Two University of Oklahoma athletes stabbed at a nightclub during a brawl that reportedly involved guns, knives and tire irons were identified by police on Tuesday.
