The McHenry County Health Department is presently probing into a few reported mumps outbreak in the county.
As per the health officials, total 8 cases of mumps have been reported in 2 locations- 2 cases at the McHenry County Correctional Facility and 6 cases at Crystal Lake Church. The health department is working towards determining if both of these locations are related.
As per the health officials, mumps generally starts showing symptoms such as headache, fever, tiredness, low appetite as well as muscle aches. Besides this, swelling in salivary gland which results in swollen jaw and puffy cheeks may also follow. These symptoms usually start showing up sixteen to eighteen days after the person contracts the infection but the period can also range from twelve to twenty five days.
Notably, mumps is a contagious disease which spreads among other individuals via the mucus or saliva secreted from the nose, mouth or the throat when a mumps infected person sneezes or coughs.
Health officials have notified the healthcare providers across McHenry County as well as the surrounding regions about the reported cases of mumps.
