Russia Recommends Residents Leave Town After Nuclear Explosion

The Russian meteorological service said that the radiation levels of the city of Severodvinsk rose by up to 16 times more last Thursday, after officials reported the explosion of the rocket propeller during a test on a maritime platform.

Moscow. The Russian authorities recommended the residents of Nyonoksa that leave the town while mitigation works are carried out following a rocket accident that caused radiation levels in the area to rise last week, the agency said Tuesday Interfax news.

The Russian meteorological service said that the radiation levels of the city of Severodvinsk rose by up to 16 times more last Thursday, after officials reported the explosion of the rocket propeller during a test on a maritime platform.

“We have received a notification…about the activities planned by the military authorities. In that case, Nyonoksa residents were asked to leave the territory as of August 14,” said Severodvinsk authorities, cited in the report.

Meanwhile, doctors who treated the victims of the accident were sent to Moscow for a medical examination, the TASS news agency said, citing an unidentified source.

Doctors sent to Moscow have signed an agreement that promises not to disclose information about the incident, TASS said.
