MEXICO CITY.

The administration of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, enlists a plan to collect DNA samples from detained migrants to place the information in a database of criminal records.

The measure would expand the use of databases that are under the control of the FBI, which contain genetic information of people who have been arrested, charged or detained for high-impact crimes.

In a call with reporters yesterday, officials from the Department of Homeland Security announced that they work together with the Department of Justice on federal legislation to authorize immigration officials to collect the samples.

Activists for the rights of migrants condemned the measure.

“This type of mass collection alters the initial objective that DNA collection should be to investigate a population that is under surveillance. This is contrary to the basic notions of trust, freedom and autonomy of society, ”said Vera Eidelman, a lawyer for the Technology and Privacy Project of the Union of Civil Liberties of America (ACLU).”

Officers detailed that the plan is inspired by actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).

The agents of that unit take quick samples to identify what they consider “fraudulent families” among the caravans of migrants.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump denied the information disclosed on an alleged proposal of his to use moats with crocodiles as a method to curb the entry of immigrants on the border with Mexico, as well as shoot them at undocumented immigrants.
